LINDA LEE MARTENS COMMUNITY HEALTH HERO OF ISLAND COUNTY SOLICITATION
HERO - a person of distinguished courage or ability admired for their noble qualities… a person who, in the opinion of others, is regarded as a model to be emulated. Most heroes live and work among us without much notice, but we all know who they are and it’s only fitting that we publically recognize and honor them.
In difficult times, local heroes can be just the inspiration we need. IslandCounty’s Community Health Advisory Board (CHAB) is again planning to honor individuals who go the extra mile to help others in need. The Linda Lee Martens Community Health Hero Award is named for the late executive secretary of our local Health Department. She was a President of Soroptimists International and a memorable participant in many local activities. She was a hero because she was an ordinary person with an extraordinary love for others.
Past awardees have been recognized for working to reduce substance abuse, addressing environmental issues, establishing projects supporting adolescents’ nutritional needs, assisting the elderly in finding health care, developing community gardens, caring for the uninsured, and for enhancing the community’s health and quality of life in numerous other ways.
We invite you to nominate individuals or groups who have made significant accomplishments toward bettering community health in any manner. Elements to consider include such factors as: project scope and objectives, measurable results (insofar as possible), urgency of the problem addressed, number of people affected, funds raised and/or committed, etc.
Let people know you think they are a hero. Send in your nomination or drop it off at any office of the Island County Health Department. Nomination forms and guidelines are available by calling (360) 678-7860 and are available online at this link.
Nominees must be residents of or employed in IslandCounty. All nominees and awardees will be recognized in three categories: Adult, Student (under age 18), and Agency.
This year CHAB will hold their evening award ceremony at the Pacific Rim Institute on the early evening of May 14 at 5:00 pm at a combined CHAB/ Special Board of Health session in recognition of the nominees for this award.
Please submit nominations prior to 15 April to:
